Tempest Weyr
With the scourge of Thread a distant memory, the influence of Pern’s dragonriders has waned. Fewer Queens rise each Turn, and as the decades–and then the centuries–pass, the Weyrs that once served as Pern’s shield are increasingly seen as relics, distrusted and resented by Holds across Pern. That is, until they are needed once more.
Three ships are presumed lost at sea on their way to the unexplored Western Continent. The search party sent from High Reaches Weyr finds no sign of the missing expedition, but they do find that they aren’t the first visitors to the West. The ecosystem has recovered in the four centuries since Thread last fell, and the forests of the Eastern Isle hide crumbling ruins, abandoned long ago.
The question of who built them, and when, swiftly becomes unimportant when Threadfall begins once more. Caught by surprise, the search party splinters. The majority of the riders and the rest of the search party–including two ships sent to explore the West as part of the rescue mission–take shelter in an abandoned Weyr carved into a caldera near the frigid sea.
Twelve Turns later, Tempest Weyr clings on, defending the stormy skies above the fledgling Tempest Hold. Life isn’t often easy in the West, and Pern’s newest Weyr has gained a slightly unsavory reputation among the Weyrs of the Northern Continent–a reputation that is not, perhaps, entirely undeserved. After surviving the first Threadfall on their own, Tempest’s leaders tend to feel that they owe nothing to the Northern Weyrs. The fact that the West is beginning to be seen as a destination for troublemakers doesn’t help. And then, of course, there are the persistent rumors that the Weyr is haunted by some malevolent force, or perhaps built by some unknown folk long before the Ancients came to Pern. Probably that’s nothing to worry about. Probably.
Getting Started
Welcome to Tempest Weyr! We are a 3-3-3/18+ semi-canon Pern site set in a 10th Pass AU in which Thread returns after a long Interval. Tempest Weyr is set in a mysterious new (or, a mysterious old) Weyr located on the Far Western Continent. Although the setting and plot will have a mild eldritch/cosmic horror flavour with some spooky elements here and there, our dragons remain fairly close to canon and come in the standard five colours (with whites waiting to be rediscovered in an on-site hatching). Dragons may also feature Aberrations, most of which have not yet been discovered IC.The site Guidebook is the place to start if you’re interested in joining. You’ll find the Joining Guide here, as well as detailed setting and site canon information! Joining the site Discord is also recommended; it’s the quickest way to contact staff and ask questions and a convenient way to plot with other members.
Site Mechanics
Detailed information can be found in the Guidebook, but here are a few highlights:- Tempest Weyr runs on a 1:1.5 time scale, meaning that 1 calendar year = 1.5 in-game years.
- Site currency (marks) can be earned by posting and participating in events. These marks can be used to purchase special items from the Shop.
- The Senior Weyrwoman is a staff NPC, while Junior Weyrwomen will be player characters. In future senior queen flights, the Weyrleader will be chosen based on a site poll.
- New wings can be formed by three or more interested players.
Current Events
In mid-late December, junior gold Pyrith will rise. The winner will be rolled and will sire a clutch, so if you’re interested in writing a blue, brown, or bronzerider this is a good time! We will also open interest checks/quest signups later in the month to gauge interest in quests for wherhandlers/other non-candidates. January will feature a Touching for Pyrith’s clutch, and dragon candidates are in high demand. Quests will also be posted at this time depending on interest. Future flights, runs, and hatchings are posted in the Flight & Hatching Schedule.Adoptable Weyrlings
If you’d like to hop in with a weyrling, Tanith’s most recent clutch, the Painted Class, is up for adoption. With the exception of the queen egg, eggs can be claimed on a first-come, first-served basis. Claimed eggs will “hatch” to reveal the dragon inside!Queen Raffle
The painted class queen egg is currently available in a raffle! The Queen Raffle will be publicly rolled in Discord on December 19th. Raffle tickets can be earned by making IC posts, recruiting a friend, and advertising.Frequently Asked Question
